Teams Prep for 2026 MLS Next Flex Event
The road to MLS NEXT Cup runs through Frisco this spring. From April 23-28, 2026, the top youth clubs in North America will converge on the Toyota Soccer Complex in Frisco, Texas for MLS NEXT Flex presented by Allstate. For players on the bubble, it’s the last chance to punch a ticket to the national championship. For everyone else, it’s one of the biggest stages of the season.
If you’re a high school player chasing college offers, this is an event worth paying attention to, whether you’re playing in it or watching your friends compete.
What Is MLS NEXT Flex?
Flex is the final qualifying competition for the 2026 MLS NEXT Cup. Teams in U15, U16, U17, and U19 age groups are placed in four-team groups, seeded based on how they performed in league play from September 2025 through March 2026. Win your group, and you’re heading to Salt Lake City in May for the Cup.
That’s the entire pitch. Three or four games. One spot. No second chances.
Why Frisco Matters in the College Recruiting Cycle
The Toyota Soccer Complex has become the spring hub for elite youth soccer, and Flex brings some of the most competitive matches of the year because of how much is on the line. College coaches know this. They show up, they take notes, and they rank players against the best competition they’ll see outside of MLS NEXT Cup itself.
For a 2027 or 2028 grad still looking to lock in an offer, putting together a strong Flex performance can genuinely move the needle. A composed 90 minutes against a top-seeded opponent tells a college coach more than ten games against mid-tier league opponents.
The Bigger Picture for 2025-26
A quick sense of scale: the 2025-26 MLS NEXT season features 273 clubs, 2,189 teams, and more than 43,000 players. Out of all of that, only a select group makes it to Frisco, and even fewer advance to the MLS NEXT Cup, which runs May 23-31, 2026 at the Regional Athletics Complex in Salt Lake City, with championship matches held at Real Salt Lake’s America First Field.
Miami Futbol Academy Rush, for example, already announced all four of their Homegrown teams (U15-U19) qualified for Flex. That’s the kind of benchmark clubs across the country are chasing right now.
How Players Should Prep
If you’re playing in Flex, the next few weeks are about sharpening, not overhauling. A few things worth focusing on:
- Dial in your fitness. Group-stage tournaments mean back-to-back games, often on short rest. The players who look sharpest in the 75th minute of the third match are the ones who get noticed.
- Clean up the video. Coaches will scout before they watch you live. Make sure your highlight reel is current and represents how you’re playing right now, not how you played a year ago.
- Know who’s watching. Look up the college coaches recruiting your age group and travel region. If a coach from a school you’re interested in will be at Flex, you want to know that before you step on the field.
- Communicate beforehand. A short email to a college coach letting them know your team, age group, field, and jersey number is a small move that makes a real difference. Coaches juggle dozens of games, and giving them a reason to watch you specifically is on you, not them.
What to Watch if You’re Not Playing
Even if your team didn’t qualify, Flex is worth following. The level of play is a good gauge for where the top programs are, and seeing how certain players handle high-pressure moments gives you a sense of what college-level intensity actually looks like. The U19 bracket in particular is a good window into the kind of soccer you’ll be expected to play your first year of college.
Turning Flex Exposure Into College Offers
Showing up and playing well is step one. Step two is making sure the right people see it and remember it. A great Flex performance means very little if a college coach can’t find your film, your academic info, and your contact details in one place a week later.
