Am I Behind If No Coaches Are Talking to Me the Summer Before Senior Year?

Am I Behind If No Coaches Are Talking to Me the Summer Before Senior Year

Short answer: probably not. Men’s college soccer recruits later than almost any other sport, and tons of commitments happen in senior fall and even spring. So if no coaches are in your inbox this summer, you likely didn’t miss the window. It’s just now opening.

But “not behind” doesn’t mean “do nothing.” The guys who commit senior year are the ones putting in work right now, not the ones waiting around. Here’s what’s normal, why, and what to do this summer.

Why Boys Soccer Runs Late

Three big reasons the timeline is slower than you’ve heard:

  • Late development. A 16-year-old can look totally different at 18. Coaches often wait to see how your body and game mature before offering.
  • The rules. For Division I, coaches can’t text or email you until June 15 after sophomore year, and official visits don’t open until August 1 of junior year. The whole system is built to move in junior and senior year.
  • Their season. College soccer starts in the fall, so coaches are running their own teams August through December and do a lot of recruiting for the next class in winter and spring.

Bottom line: senior year is prime time, not the leftovers.

What “Normal” Looks Like

Take two players. One commits to a D1 program in November of junior year. The other hears nothing until August before senior year, goes to an ID camp in September, and signs in the spring. Both are completely normal. The second path is arguably more common in men’s soccer.

Players who actually fall behind aren’t quiet in July. They’re quiet in November, December, and January because they assumed it would just happen.

The Real Way to Fall Behind

Coaches can’t recruit a player they’ve never heard of. The mistake isn’t committing late, it’s being invisible. A highlight video gets you on the radar, emails get coaches to watch it, and camps get them to see you live. If none of that is happening, you might genuinely be behind, but that’s fixable fast, and summer is a great time to fix it.

Your Summer Action Plan

  • Update your highlight video. Two to four minutes, best clips first, jersey number in the opening. If it’s a year old, refilm it.
  • Build a target list of 20 to 30 schools. Mix reaches, fits, and safe bets across D1, D2, D3, and NAIA. The talent runs deep below D1, so don’t sleep on it.
  • Email coaches directly and personalize each one. Grad year and position in the subject line, plus your stats, academics, film link, and schedule. Generic mass emails get ignored.
  • Get in front of coaches live. One ID camp at a school that wants you beats ten random tournaments.
  • Lock in academics. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center and keep your grades up. Strong academics unlock money and make you an easy “yes.”
  • Follow up (follow up again and again): Reply fast, keep coaches updated, and send new film as you get it.

The Bottom Line

No, you’re almost certainly not behind. In boys soccer, senior year is when a lot of the real action happens. Just don’t coast. Get your film tight, send those emails, and get in front of the right coaches, and “quiet in July” turns into “committed by spring.”
